The speaker is in awe of the tiger (spelled Tyger in this poem), whose eyes gleam in the darkness of the forest. He was known to be passionate about politics and was affected by revolutions, prompting his writings about tyranny later in his life. This technique was used to publish Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience. He was very close to his dying brother, Robert he had once announced that the deceased Robert had informed himself how to illustrate poems in “illuminated writing”. He was also introduced to Harriet Mathew and gained favor by reciting poems in her drawing room which was a meeting place for artists and musicians. He married Catherine Boucher and taught her how to read and write. It was rumoured that he was present at the front of the mob that burned Newgate prison. The riots of June 1780, which were incited by anti-Catholic preaching and by resistance to continued war against American colonists, affected him deeply. He was apprenticed to an engraver, James Basire at the age of 14 and left his apprenticeship at 21 before enrolling in the Royal Academy. Born on 28 th November 1757 into a family of moderate means, he was not enrolled into formal school but was sent to Pars’ drawing school at the age of 10 as encouragement of his artistic talents. William Blake lived and worked in London at a time of great social and political change that profoundly influenced his writing, becoming one of the most visionary of English poets and one of the great progenitors of English Romanticism.
